Last year's event was a great success - thanks to you - we raised over $90,000 to support country women affected by breast cancer. This year, we're doing it all again, but all funds raised will be directed towards the purchase of a new accommodation facility for our country cancer patients who require long term accommodation in Sydney whilst they receive treatment in hospital.

Chloë McCardel :

Cuba to USA World Record Attempt raising
funds for Can Assist

In June this year, Australian marathon swimmer Chloë McCardel will be tackling a 170 kilometre non-stop 50 to 70 hour world record swim from Cuba to the United States of America, across the powerful and unpredictable Gulf Stream and Florida Straits. She won’t be using a shark cage, flippers or wetsuit. This will be the longest continuous solo swim in history from point to point without assistance and in open water, at least 50% further than the current record (108km).

A cause which is close to her heart, Chloë will use this opportunity to raise much needed funds for cancer research and support for those with cancer. Can Assist is delighted to be selected as one of the charities she will be supporting.

The physical aspect of endurance required by a solo swimmer to conquer this enormous swim, non-stop, across the Gulf Straits from one country to another in a small way symbolises the fight and incredible challenge many people face during their own journey with cancer.

“I don’t want to just set an incredible new World Record, I also want to raise Half a Million Dollars for Cancer charities across the world, and to do this I am going to need YOUR HELP!!”

Please JOIN the fight! MAKE A DONATION HERE. It's simple, fast and totally secure.

Many thanks for your support!

About Can Assist

Can Assist provides accommodation, financial assistance and home-based support to people in country NSW affected by cancer.

Can Assist was established in 1955 by Mrs Mona Ham, a trained nurse who recognised the lack of support services specifically designed to assist rural cancer patients and their families. Mona worked tirelessly and in 1961 the Jean Colvin Hospital opened, later to be known as the Jean Colvin Cancer Centre. Today Can Assist continues to provide accommodation to country families with cancer through our Sydney Accommodation Service and Lilier Lodge in Wagga Wagga.

Our Vision

Every country community, family and individual has equitable access to cancer care and support services.

Our Services

Can Assist provides practical support for country families struggling with the challenges of a cancer diagnosis and distance.

How You Can Assist

With less than 8% in government funding we rely on our supporters, corporate partners and volunteers to help us address the appalling inequity between city & country cancer care.
